The bank has also sent a message warning to customers who have KYC dues.

Why did SBI take such drastic measures?

As per the provisions of the Money Laundering Act, 2002 and Money Laundering (Maintenance of Records) Rules, 2005 as amended from time to time by the Government of India notified by the Government of India. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) website states that entities are required to follow certain customer identification procedures while establishing transactions or otherwise transacting on any account-based relationship.

According to the guidelines issued by RBI, thus the bank will have to update its KYC after a certain time and the notice will inform the customers that their KYC is outstanding.

The RBI has revised its KYC guidelines and made the National Population Register (NPR) papers a valid document.
